If you feel like everyone on social media is going capsule crazy, you’re not alone. Here at Blue Bungalow, we’re always discussing the beauty of a capsule wardrobe, and we thought it was time we shared our secrets with you. If the idea of less stress, more time and saving money sounds good, keep reading to learn more about the illustrious capsule wardrobe.
The definition of a capsule wardrobe according to the Blue Bungalow dictionary: A wardrobe of easily interchangeable pieces, that are functional, timeless, and ever so flattering. The items can be seamlessly styled together to create an array of outfits suitable for any occasion.
The idea of creating a new wardrobe out of what you already have might be a little daunting but we’re here to help. Now, you’re going to have to bear with us, the first step is to clear out your current wardrobe. You don’t have to go full Marie Kondo, just start by looking at what you wear often and what makes you feel special. Once you know what makes you feel like YOU, it is time to say adieu to the no-noes (we understand if you need a few minutes to part with the old favourites that aren’t quite right anymore). It doesn’t have to be goodbye forever, why not donate your old clothes to a local charity or pass them on to a friend!
Our talents at BB lie more in fashion than maths, so we don’t have a magic number for you, however, we recommend sticking to 30-40 items. This allows for the perfect mix of tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear! This is not a hard and fast rule, so feel free to chop and change depending on the season. Remember this can include things you already own, you don’t need to go out and buy 30 new items (but you are more than welcome to!).
Keeping your wardrobe limited to the essentials makes it easier to formulate a capsule wardrobe planner. We recommend making sure your items contain comfortable and classic basics with a smaller mix of feature pieces. This will make planning what to wear a breeze!
The next step is to think about the styles, shapes, and colours you’d like to focus on in the coming season. This is your chance to define how you want your wardrobe to look and feel, while keeping in mind the pieces you already love and wear often.
If you’d like a little extra guidance, our styling sessions are a wonderful place to start. Whether you’re visiting us in-store or booking a virtual appointment, our experienced stylists are here to help you refine your choices and build a capsule wardrobe that feels effortless and uniquely yours.
How you organise your capsule wardrobe is ultimately up to you but here are three rules to follow if you want to build the wardrobe of your wildest fantasies!
Getting dressed for the day becomes so much easier when you love everything you have. If your trusty jeans are no longer bringing you joy, it is time to say goodbye. You wouldn’t keep hanging out with a friend that makes you unhappy, so why let your clothes hang out in your closet!
Pick items that pair together well. While a wardrobe of 30 statement items may be fun, you’ll soon feel like you’re running out of options. By choosing styles that are easy to mix and match the outfit possibilities are endless. This doesn’t mean you can’t stand out - try playing around with bright and loud accessories to let your personality shine.
Your capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to last forever. At the end of the season, if an item is no longer making you feel your best, it is time to swap it out for something else. The aim of a capsule wardrobe is to have clothes that you want to wear. Swapping items out will help you feel fresh and fabulous!
We’re glad you asked! Our ultra-stylish team has come up with some standout capsule wardrobe essentials that make getting dressed feel simple and enjoyable. Think comfortable, easy-to-wear basics that form the foundation of your wardrobe, paired with a few feature pieces that add interest and personality. When your wardrobe is built on versatile staples, mixing and matching becomes second nature, giving you endless outfit options without the overwhelm.
If you’re not sure where to begin, exploring our basics collection is a great starting point. These timeless pieces are designed to work seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe, helping you create looks that feel both polished and effortless. From there, you can layer in your favourite colours, textures, and accessories to make each outfit your own.
We hope you have fun refreshing your wardrobe and creating a capsule that truly works for you. If you’d like a little extra support along the way, our wonderful customer experience team is always here to help with personalised styling advice and recommendations.
Creating a capsule wardrobe is not about limiting your style, but about refining it in a way that feels effortless and true to you. When every piece in your wardrobe works together, getting dressed becomes simpler, more enjoyable, and far less time-consuming. We find that a well-curated capsule wardrobe allows us to focus on what really matters—feeling comfortable, confident, and ready for whatever the day brings.
As you build your own capsule wardrobe, remember that it should evolve with you. Keep what you love, refresh what no longer serves you, and don’t be afraid to add a touch of personality through colour, texture, and accessories. If you’re ready to take the next step, explore our latest arrivals or connect with our stylists to help you create a capsule wardrobe that feels uniquely yours.
Start by considering your daily routine and the occasions you dress for most often. A capsule wardrobe should reflect your lifestyle, whether that includes relaxed weekends, social outings, or travel. Focus on pieces that can transition easily between these moments. When your wardrobe aligns with your day-to-day life, getting dressed feels far more intuitive.
Absolutely, a capsule wardrobe does not have to mean neutrals only. While a base of classic tones can make mixing and matching easier, adding a few printed or colourful pieces brings personality to your outfits. The key is choosing colours that complement each other so everything still works together. This way, your wardrobe remains cohesive while still feeling expressive.
We recommend reviewing your capsule wardrobe at the change of each season. This gives you the chance to assess what you’ve worn, what you’ve loved, and what might need replacing. Small updates keep your wardrobe feeling fresh without overwhelming you. It’s all about maintaining a collection that continues to serve you well.
Not at all, most capsule wardrobes begin with pieces you already own. Start by identifying your favourite items and building around them. You may choose to add a few key pieces to fill gaps, but there is no need for a complete overhaul. A capsule wardrobe is about thoughtful selection, not constant shopping.
