Bamboo Care Guide
Bamboo Care Made Easy
Bamboo is one of our favourite fabrics here at Blue Bungalow, and judging by your reviews, it’s a favourite of yours too!
Naturally soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, bamboo feels wonderful against the skin and is ideal for everyday wear.
From flattering skirts and dresses to tees and underwear, our bamboo pieces are versatile, elegant and perfectly suited to the Australian climate - combining comfort, style, and sustainability in every piece.
Why Choose Bamboo
Natural Fibre
Bamboo is a natural fibre made from the cellulose found in the fast-growing bamboo plant. Bamboo’s natural origin also means it’s biodegradable and eco-friendly, giving you a fabric that’s kind to both your skin and the planet.
Thermoregulating
Bamboo is thermoregulating, which means that it regulates your body temperature to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Hot flushes are no match for the magic of bamboo!
Antibacterial
Bamboo naturally resists bacteria, which is why it’s a popular choice for activewear and bedding. Unlike synthetic fabrics, our bamboo pieces will keep you feeling fresh by reducing odours, so you can wear them with confidence all day.
Care Instructions
1. Washing
We recommend washing your bamboo either by hand or by selecting a delicate, cold cycle, turning clothes inside out and using a gentle detergent. If you have a washing bag, even better, just pop it in there before throwing it in the washing machine for an extra layer of protection.
2. Drying
Bamboo clothes are best air-dried to keep them soft and maintain their shape. After washing, gently press out excess water without wringing or twisting, then lay flat on a clean surface or hang on a padded hanger. Avoid direct sunlight or heat, as this can cause fading or damage to the fibres.
3. Ironing
Hanging your bamboo clothes should be enough to get minor creases out but, if your clothes are wrinkly after being packed away for a while, you can turn your garments inside out and iron them out on low heat, putting a clean tea towel between the iron and the fabric to avoid any discolouration.
4. Storing
To store bamboo clothing, keep garments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Lightweight pieces can be hung on padded hangers to maintain their shape, while heavier items are best folded neatly.
Answering Your Frequntly Asked Questions
We’re all a bit clumsy at times. If you’ve inadvertently stained your favourite bamboo dress, simply pre-treat the stain with a small amount of detergent or stain remover and let it soak for a few minutes before washing according to care instructions. Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to use bleach as this could permanently damage the fabric.
Bamboo fabrics can vary, but most of the pieces we stock have a little added elastane, giving them just the right amount of stretch for maximum comfort! This slight stretch also helps our bamboo basics drape beautifully, feel soft against the skin, and retain their shape wear after wear.
Yes! Bamboo is considered a highly sustainable fabric. It grows incredibly quickly, requires very little water, and rarely needs pesticides or fertilisers, making it an eco-friendly choice for anyone looking to shop more consciously.
Absolutely - bamboo fabric is antibacterial and hypoallergenic, making it less likely that you will get an adverse reaction if you have sensitive skin. And because it is so silky smooth on the skin, bamboo clothing is a great option for those that suffer from eczema or psoriasis.
Like most natural fibres, heat can cause bamboo fabric to shrink, so make sure that you care for your clothes accordingly by washing in cold water and drying in the shade to preserve their shape.
Bamboo is wonderfully low-maintenance and naturally resists creasing. While it can wrinkle if not folded or stored carefully, there’s no need to worry - a gentle steam or simply hanging your garment in the bathroom during a hot shower will usually smooth out any lines effortlessly.
