The Ultimate Guide to Dressing for a Christening: Outfit Ideas and Etiquette Tips

A christening is a joyous and momentous occasion that you’ll be sure to remember for years to come. But we know some are all too familiar with the impending dread that may come with a christening invitation, brought on by the pressing question “What will I wear?!”

Granted, finding the perfect christening guest outfit can be confusing. How formal is too formal? Can I wear a dress that shows off my shoulders? Is it rude to wear black? Well, don’t fret! Here is our ultimate guide to all things christening attire!

What do I wear to a christening baptism?

When picking an outfit for a christening our best advice is to opt for an elevated look over something more casual. Trust us, it’s always better to be overdressed! A christening is a formal occasion but the dress code is a bit more relaxed than a wedding – softer silhouettes and bolder prints are perfectly fine. Of course, when in doubt, always ask the parents hosting the christening if they have any dress code preferences. That way, you can’t go wrong!

Often, what elevates a look from ‘everyday’ to ‘special occasion’ is a few subtle tailoring details. Think waist seams or ties to create shape, darting around the bust, frills, hem detailing and statements sleeves. A garment that fits you like a glove can be the difference between drab and fab! Our BB guide on how to get the perfect fit online.

What is appropriate to wear to a christening?

Modesty should definitely factor into your choice of outfit for a christening. Look for silhouettes that are more A-line and floaty over bodycon dresses that will ride up with every step. Modest necklines and sleeved styles are your friends - no spaghetti straps or off-shoulder necklines in sight.

Another good rule of thumb is that your dress can be shorter or sheer, but not both. In terms of length, a general guide is that when you’re standing, your dress should be long enough that your fingertips don’t reach the hem. For sheer or partial coverage garments like broderie anglaise, always wear a camisole or slip underneath.

What shouldn't you wear to a christening?

To avoid raising eyebrows, avoid anything that you can’t picture Kate Middleton wearing. In short, nothing backless or strapless and definitely nothing that shows off your undergarments!

Is it OK to wear jeans to a christening?

We know, jeans are our daily go-to and yes, they can be styled up for certain dressier occasions. But unfortunately, the formal status of a christening rules out jeans as an option. In fact, we would avoid denim completely! Same goes for leather (or faux leather), which would be more fitting for a night out than a church.

If you’re wanting to avoid dresses, pair a simple cotton pant with a dressier top, or go for a printed wide leg pant in silk or rayon.

What shoes should I wear to a christening?

To nail the christening dress code, we’re sorry to say you’ll have to leave the sneakers at home. But, keep in mind that you might be on your feet for long periods, so stay away from sky-high stilettos. Instead, opt for a stylish set of wedges, dress shoes or flats.

What accessories should I wear to a christening?

We all know that the key to a fabulous outfit is accessorising!

For bags, leave any totes at home and reach for a clutch or a dainty crossbody bag to go hands-free.

If your outfit is feeling a little plain, a few statement pieces of jewellery can save the day! Pop on a colourful pair of earrings, a fun bracelet or an oversized necklace to elevate your look. On the other hand, if you’re already wearing a loud print or a bold design, keep jewellery simple and elegant.

Is it OK to wear black to a christening? What about white?

Luckily, these wedding dress code no-noes’ don’t apply to christenings so feel free to bust out any black or white looks. But, keep in mind it is a joyous occasion so don’t be afraid of colours or a fun print, especially if it’s a daytime event.

If you do choose a brighter colour or a bold print, make sure the style is simple and the length modest. Also, keep accessories to a minimum. You wouldn’t want to draw attention away from the ceremony!

A christening is an exciting event, so we hope you’re feeling ready to celebrate in style. Leave a comment below with your tips for christening dressing, we’d love to hear them!
