So, you’ve decided to get in on the #bakinginisolation trend but with the oven on and the kitchen heating up, you’ve realised you need to throw on a loose, comfy dress that will not only get you through a cook-off but a quick run to the shops because you’re missing an ingredient?

Enter the ‘Baking Dress’! Aka the Vallarta Cotton Slub Dress.

Why wear a dress for a cooking sesh you ask? Well, when you’ve lost count of what day it is, you’ve finished your to-do list on the fridge and you’ve got a sugar itch that just needs scratching, it’s time to spruce yourself up and bust out the cake tin! Don't let anyone tell you you can't get dolled up just to do some baking, you don't need that kind of negativity in your life...

A draped style dress is ideal for a little kitchen time. With wide sleeves and a straight-line shape, you can still pop on your fave apron and be comfortable enough to stir the ingredients with ease. Feel like jazzing things up even more? Tie a scarf in your hair and you’re giving Nigella Lawson a run for her money in the style AND cooking stakes.

 

 

An added bonus of the Baking Dress is breathability – with the oven at 180° and all that mixing to do, you want to stay cool both under pressure and under your apron. Plus, lightweight cotton means no clinging while a little added stretch allows you to move around the kitchen like a pro.

But wait, missing an ingredient? No stress, take off your apron, put on your flats and you can pop up to the shops without the need to get changed out of your “house clothes”…

Now all you need is a recipe and since there are a few cake aficionado’s here at BB HQ, we thought we should get them to share some of their favourites with you. And to make things even better, these cakes are flourless! #isolationlife 

 

Flourless Chocolate Cake (download the recipe card here)
Ingredients
200g butter (chopped)
250g dark chocolate (chopped)
4 eggs, separated
1 cup caster sugar 

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°. Grease a 22cm round springform cake pan, lining the base and sides with baking paper.

2. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water in the saucepan). Stir over low heat until it’s smooth.

3. With an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks and ½ cup of sugar for 5 minutes or until thick and creamy. Beat the egg whites in a separate bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in the remaining sugar until it’s dissolved.

4. Add the chocolate mixture to the egg yolk mixture and mix to combine. Add one-quarter of the egg white mixture and mix well. Fold in the remaining egg white mixture.

5. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 50 minutes or until the top is firm to touch and an inserted skewer has moist crumbs clinging to it. Cool in the cake tin and serve.

 

Flourless Orange and Almond Cake (download the recipe card here)
Ingredients
2 oranges
6 eggs
250g caster sugar
250g almond meal
1tsp baking powder 

Method
1. Wash the oranges and place them into a large pot, covered with water. Boil for 2 hours checking there’s always water covering the oranges. Remove them and allow them to cool completely.

2. Preheat the oven to 160° and line a 22cm springform cake tin with baking paper.

3. Cut the ends off the oranges and discard, then chop the oranges into quarters (removing any seeds but leaving the skins on) and place in a food processor until smooth and no lumps remain.

4. Beat the eggs and caster sugar in a bowl until pale and frothy (about 2 minutes on high if you’re using a hand beater). Add the orange puree and slowly stir through with a spoon.

5. Add the almond meal and baking powder and mix to combine then pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin. 

 

The only question left to ask is do baking and fashion go together? Like cake and icing if you ask us... Happy baking!
