1. Home News Eco Tan: Making the Switch to Natural Organic Skincare

Blog

You’re a BB shopper so you obviously have great taste and care about how you look, you’re mindful about what you put in your body (hey, we won’t hold those occasional glasses of champagne against you), but have you ever thought about what you’re putting on your skin?

Natural and organic beauty products are having a moment, and for good reason - we’ve recently started stocking the full Eco Tan range and we are officially OBSESSED.

Why switch to natural skincare?

As much as we’d like to tell you otherwise, your skin is not an impenetrable barrier. While there’s no way to tell exactly how much of what you put on your skin really gets absorbed into your bloodstream, there is no reason to risk it when there are great natural alternative options out there.

Most traditional skincare and beauty products contain synthetic fragrances, fillers and hidden chemicals, all of which can irritate your skin.

A bit like reading through an ingredient list at the supermarket, choosing natural skincare products will ensure that you know exactly what you’re actually putting on your skin and allow you to identify what formulas work best for your skin type.

What is the difference between natural and organic skincare?

Any product that contains at least one natural ingredient can technically claim to be “natural”; this generally means an ingredient that is a plant, animal or mineral by-product, in other words, that is of natural sources, which is why some companies tend to use it as a marketing term.

It’s like a bag of chips in the health food section at your local store - it’s not because it claims that it’s fat-free that it will replace your daily serving of veg.

On the other hand, to be labelled as certified “organic” in Australia under the National Standard for Organic and Bio‐Dynamic Produce, at least 95% of ingredients must be from organic or bio-dynamic production and, to be labelled as “made with organic ingredients”, that percentage is 70%, with the remaining of agricultural origins.

Eco Tan was actually the first tanning brand in Australia to receive an organic certification from the Organic Food Chain (OFC), with most of their products above the 90% certified organic ingredient mark. It also means that Eco Tan products do not contain any GMOs, synthetic ingredients, animal by-products, pesticides or herbicides. Phew, that’s a mouthful!

While fashion is our main game, we also have a bit of a skincare obsession going on over here. We are huge believers in the Eco Tan product range and we are so excited to bring it to you!

Do natural skincare products work?

They sure do! And, for some, work better than traditional high-end cosmetics. As with many things in life, sometimes, simplicity is key.

Most natural skincare ingredients have been around for hundreds of years - the challenge is knowing what works well together and what will deliver actual results. Now, don’t go mixing essential oils in the kitchen, Eco Tan has done all the hard work for us.

With a list of ingredients that you can actually understand and no synthetics and fillers, such as silicones, the Eco Tan product range is also vegan, which means that it doesn’t use any animal derivatives, and is cruelty-free.

We know, we know, letting go of the face cream that you’ve been using for the past 20 years would feel like treachery but we can keep a secret...

If you're like us, you likely have accumulated a cupboard full of creams, serums and miracle potions over the years...

Whether you decide to go cold turkey and start over or opt to replace one product at a time, here is the hydrating skincare routine tried and tested by a few of the ladies at Blue Bungalow.

1. Eco Super Citrus Cleanser - $29.95

The first step in any good skincare routine is to gently cleanse the skin, without stripping it of its natural moisture - this is especially important in winter when your face feels like sandpaper.

The oil-free Super Citrus Cleanser contains anti-inflammatory aloe vera, lemongrass and antioxidant-packed finger lime - it is a great, affordable option i.e. you won’t have a heart attack if your husband decides to start using it too!

Simply apply 1 to 2 pumps to your face and neck, morning and night, and wash off with warm water before patting skin dry with a clean towel. If you were wearing sunscreen (which you should be - yes, even if it’s cloudy) you might want to double-cleanse.

2. Eco Organic Super Acai Exfoliator - $34.95

To be used once or twice a week only, this all-natural exfoliant targets clogged pores and dead skin cells using dead sea and magnesium salts, hydrating acai and chia, avocado and coconut oils for a bright, revived complexion.

Squeeze out a pea size amount and gently massage on to dry skin using circular motions for a deep exfoliation - keyword: gently, now is not the time to take your anger out on your poor skin! Leave on for 2-3 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water. This will prep your skin for the next steps in your routine.

3. Eco Organic Face Compost Purple Power Mask - $39.95

We love a good face mask, especially when it’s non-toxic!

Whether you’re getting ready for a special night out or simply enjoying some precious self-care time with a bubble bath and a glass of vino, the Face Compost Purple Power Mask packs a punch. This Australian clay-based formula contains collagen-boosting dragon fruit extract, brightening acerola extract and antibacterial prickly pear.

Apply a generous layer all over your face and neck, leave on for 7 minutes and simply rinse off to reveal smooth, supple skin; the perfect base for your skincare or makeup application.

4. Eco Tan Organic Glory Oil - $49.95

Glory Oil is a lightweight blend of organic grape seed, coconut, jojoba, acai, chia seed, pumpkin seed and inca inchi seed oils - in other words, a moisture bomb!

Use a few drops of this rich, cold-pressed face oil to lock in moisture and plump up fine lines (so long, Botox) - it’s also a great product to use on scars and soothe irritated skin. Glory Oil has become a bit of a cult favourite in recent years; you really need to try it to believe it.

5. Eco Organic Super Fruit Hydrator - $39.95

Used alone in summer or mixed with a few drops of the Glory Oil in winter, the Super Fruit Hydrator is light yet hydrating and acts as the perfect makeup primer.

Hyaluronic acid locks in moisture while coconut water’s natural antibacterial properties keep acne at bay and wild harvest plum nourishes the skin - we love a good all-rounder.

BONUS STEP: for a sun-kissed glow, apply a few drops of the Eco Tan Face Tan Water to your face and neck a few times a week - who needs makeup when you’re wearing your favourite BB frock and glowing from within!
